About

Kelechi Urama is a Maryland-native and first-generation American born to Nigerian immigrants. She is currently a Story Editor on a returning Syfy series and was previously a Staff Writer on season 2 of Run the World on Starz. She previously optioned her pilot, I NEED BLACK FRIENDS, to Party Over Here and CBS Studios, and won the Grand Prize in the 2020 WeScreenplay TV Pilot contest. She is also a 2021 Blackmagic Collective’s Breakthrough Initiative Fellow.

Kelechi was a dreamy kid who loved television and movies. Though she eventually went to college intending to pursue law, Kelechi’s lifelong love of film and television soon led her to screenwriting. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh with her B.A. in Communications, she wrote for publications like Pittsburgh City Paper, xoJane, and Sampsonia Way magazine while writing and producing short films in her free time.

As a screenwriter, Kelechi aims to diversify the type of representation we often see of Black women and girls on television. Her protagonists are offbeat, humorous, and relatable. Her work often features a hint of the surreal — which she credits to her Nigerian background (in Nollywood, even a romantic comedy will feature a demonic witch out to poison characters’ food).

Kelechi resides in the Los Angeles area and is represented by Scott Perraud/Spencer Reiss at UTA.
